Letter from the editors

Amid the huge challenges brought to us by the COVID-19 pandemic, payments companies are not only pivoting to adapt to changing conditions, they are also continuing the dynamic ongoing evolution the industry is known for. Tough. Flexible. Innovative. All those descriptors apply to leaders in our realm. This issue's lead article on the third wave in payments delves into the industry's next evolutionary step. Once again, payments professionals must push beyond boundaries to adapt or risk becoming irrelevant as the industry moves forward.

Not to worry. Our contributing writers offer advice and information to help the industry's feet on the street, and those who support them, thrive. Areas discussed include how the pandemic is causing many ISOs to examine cash flow management, cash preservation, team and self-accountability and much more to strengthen their companies now and in the future; how online ordering has become essential for millions of people and why secure cashless payments are blossoming; the software revenue acquiring model's ascendance and why it makes sense to transition from a hardware-focused model; and reservations about the looming EMV-compliance deadline for petroleum retailers.

While unprecedented numbers of us are working from home and social distancing remains in place for the most part, positive signs are visible in many communities in terms of slower spread of the new coronavirus, and in terms of developments in the payments industry. Companies with state-of-the-art technology are partnering to help small businesses get a share of the second round of Payroll Protection Program funds; sectors like e-gift cards and e-gifting are booming, in part, because individuals are purchasing gift cards for businesses in their communities to help keep them open, as well as sending charitable gifts to nonprofits to further their work; and ISOs and MLSs are using new and existing tools to help their merchant clients shore up operations and find new ways to do business.
