Readers Speak: Events cancelled due to coronavirus

Most everyone knows by now that in endeavoring to slow the spread of the coronavirus, major league sports events have been cancelled, Disneyland and Disney World have closed, many schools have shut their doors, iconic festivals have been cancelled, lights are out on Broadway, and people, seniors in particular, are being encouraged to stay home.

This makes me think of the upcoming payments industry events, particularly the Southeast Acquirers Association and Electronic Transactions Association’s annual meetings set for April. Has there been talk of those events being postponed? Should there be? What have you heard?

Also, we've now entered a bear stock market after an unprecedented bull market run. People are cancelling vacations, foregoing meals out at restaurants, avoiding movie theaters, shopping online instead of at brick-and-mortar stores. Workers are telecommuting, getting laid off or having their hours reduced. This is bound to dampen transaction volumes and corresponding residuals. Are people talking about how hard hit our industry is likely to be?

Leland Dallas, Merchant Level Salesperson

Leland,

We just received word that the SEAA is postponing its annual meeting until June 15 to 17, 2020. Full details are in a breaking news story here: www.greensheet.com/breakingnews.php?article_id=2363e. As we send this issue to the printer, ETA's Transact show April 27 to 30 in Las Vegas has been cancelled.. They are currently trying to reschedule at least a part of the show. The situation is fluid, and nobody knows how severely this global pandemic is going to affect all of us . If we learn of additional changes to event schedules, we will post that information in It’s Showtime on www.greensheet.com. And we will continue to follow this evolving crisis and report on its potential impact on payments and the industries we serve.
