Letter from the editors

While we've been preparing this issue for you, extreme volatility has returned to the stock market. We cannot know what this might portend for our economy in the coming months. However, one thing is certain: there is good reason why members of The Green Sheet Advisory Board are leaders in our industry, many heading some of today's most successful payments enterprises. In a series of questions, we asked these experts to share perspectives and advice on the economy – how to take advantage of its current strength and how to prepare for inevitable fluctuations ahead.

The answers they shared convey a strong combination of knowledge and common sense. We've included a segment of their responses in this magazine's lead article. The remaining answers will be included in a following issue. We think you'll be reassured that the individuals featured herein are among our industry's major influencers.

There's also plenty of wisdom to be found elsewhere on these pages. Experts have written about the role payments companies play in national security; how to navigate reputational risk issues; why it pays to go out of your way to be proactive while pursuing and maintaining merchant accounts; rules for shifting credit card fees to consumers; the need to learn how to position yourself to stay top of mind for your merchants; the importance of mastering your verticals during a time of innovation and disruption; and the rationale for creating a data-driven culture in your company.

We cover news from all corners of payments. For example, in News Briefs, you'll find coverage of Visa's support for dynamic currency conversion at ATMs; a new effort to sideline passwords; Verizon's detection of pervasive security flaws; a continued push for cash discounting; progress with real-time payments; support for the ETA's self-regulation program; and the sunset of Google Plus for consumers due to a security flaw. You'll also find our customary updates on individual and company achievements, industry research, new partnerships and acquisitions, and executive appointments. And no issue would be complete without our product and company profiles.

We always welcome constructive feedback. What do you like about this publication? What topics would you like us to investigate? Tell us at greensheet@greensheet.com. And don't forget to send your press releases to press@greensheet.com. We'll share your news under News From the Wire on our home page, as well as consider it for inclusion in Industry Update. end of article
