Letter from the editors

With the close of 2016 drawing near, we took a look at some of the major trends and events of the year and pulled the highlights together in our traditional year-end wrap-up article. On just about every front in payments, the movers and shakers in the industry are making things happen; outside forces, too, are influencing our realm. From major acquisitions and mobile commerce breakthroughs; to progress and challenges associated with EMV and PCI; to legal and regulatory actions affecting specific companies, as well as the industry as a whole; to the expanding role of payment pros; 2016 has been one dynamic year.

And as we combed through articles and studies, and recalled email and phone conversations we'd had over the past 12 months, we were filled with gratitude for the support we've received from our readers, advertisers and advisory board members in our mission to provide a truly useful resource for the industry's feet on the street and other payment professionals seeking to make a great living while also fostering best practices among their peers.

We can't talk about gratitude without mentioning our contributing writers. Throughout each year, they fill our Education and Views sections with relevant, actionable information and advice. In this issue, you'll find articles on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's new regulations for prepaid accounts, new developments in multifactor authentication, applying a few lessons from puppy training to teaching new agents, and how minimalism can lead to financial freedom.

Other articles delve into a new digital management platform that could spur users to forego physical wallets, new Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard guidelines published to help organizations understand how to segment cardholder data, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's paper on granting special purpose bank charters to fintech companies, an EMV compliance deadline extension to October 2020 for petroleum dealers, and the record-breaking ecommerce transactions reported for the post-Thanksgiving kickoff of the holiday season.

In addition to informative profiles and product stories, you'll also find briefs on individual and company milestones, including office expansions, awards, investments, legal settlements, new guidelines, research, partnerships, acquisitions, appointments and more. We hope you had your share of professional milestones in 2016 and hope we've been an aid to you along the way. Let us know how we can be of further help to your career at greensheet@greensheet.com.
