Letter from the editor

This issue's lead article is all about today's POS hardware landscape and the many options now available to ISOs, merchant level salespeople and other service providers. The transformative nature of technology is in evidence, but the evolution of payments is, at heart, a human story. Back when the industry began, larger than life entrepreneurs changed the face of commerce with only knuckle busters and ingenuity. The face of the industry has changed, but it continues to attract dynamic individuals whose creativity brings ever more value to merchants and consumers, while bringing a great living to many payments professionals.

One outstanding quality of the payments community is the desire to help others in the field, even competitors. We aim to contribute to this effort by featuring articles written by experts with experience in many aspects of the industry. In this issue you'll read about a burst of interest in cryptocurrencies on the part of some of the biggest names in payments; why ISOs sometimes engage their personal liability even when they operate through a company and what issues they should watch out for; why MLSs need to engage merchants' emotions in the post-COVID era; and benefits merchants can gain when they take on partners.

News in payments is always brewing because, in addition to rapidly developing technology, there are new ventures and partnerships forming, in-depth research being released, industry conferences bringing new developments to light, government and regulatory initiatives looming, and more. We mention some of these in Industry Update in each issue. We also post news stories regularly on our home page, some of which are highlighted in News Briefs.

Recent stories include optimism generated about the economy because COVID cases are falling and studies indicate consumer spending is robust; retail industry leaders who gathered to discuss the future of the store in our digital age; the ETA's attendance at a congressional meeting on how a cashless economy impacts the disadvantaged; new initiatives to pilot a framework for exchanging electronic invoices and a framework for electronic delivery of remittance information across all payment types; and a FIDO Alliance conference on advancements in user authentication methods.

Product and company profiles are included in each issue. If you'd like your company or products to be profiled, or if you have feedback for us, please email greensheet@greensheet.com. If you have news to share, please send a press release to presss@greensheet.com. end of article
