We all know that today's payment professionals, as well as other financial services and merchant services providers, are driven to enhance and transform the retail experience for merchants and consumers. Who is galvanizing change from within the retail sector? That is the question we posed when research began on this issue's lead article, "Retail disruptors redefine commerce."

We found there is, indeed, a new breed of retail disruptors living where growth and scale intersect. These innovators place a premium on quality, speed and responsiveness, along with the capacity to reinvent customer experiences. They are neither very large nor small upstart companies, but predominantly in the mid-tier retail segment. The reasons for this, in addition to further insights, are divulged within these pages.

We are welcoming a disruptor of another sort in this edition, too. Our new Street SmartsSM author, Steve Norell, Director of Sales at US Merchant Services Inc., plans to stir things up this year, and we hope you'll help him. So please check out his inaugural column on page 38, and get involved.

Other esteemed contributing writers offer much of value, as well. You'll find discussions of fraud-prevention challenges in the mobile channel; how merchants can make use of transaction data to gain insight into their businesses; the advantages traditional types of payments have over cyrptocurrencies; and efforts to move toward not only cashless payments, but also toward cashier-less payments.
