Expand cash drawer connectivity, functionality across POS environments

Star Micronics launched the mC-Connect Drawer (MCD10), a cash drawer controller designed to enable direct control of cash drawers from POS systems, tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.

The device is intended to support increasingly flexible POS environments in which businesses are deploying mobile devices, tablet-based systems and shared checkout configurations alongside traditional printer-based POS setups. According to Star Micronics, the controller allows POS devices to communicate directly with cash drawers that use standard RJ-12 connectivity, eliminating the need for a desktop receipt printer in certain deployments.

An impressive range of use cases

The MCD10 is designed for a range of retail and restaurant use cases, including mobile POS, shared till operations, assisted selling, kiosk deployments, pop-up retail and space-constrained checkout counters. It can also operate alongside traditional printer-driven cash drawer environments.

The controller supports USB, Ethernet, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 connectivity within a single hardware model, allowing businesses to standardize deployments across multiple locations and adapt to varying POS configurations without requiring separate devices, the company pointed out.

Highly compatible and versatile

Star Micronics also said the MCD10 is compatible with existing cash drawers equipped with standard RJ-12 connectors, enabling businesses to modernize deployments without replacing installed hardware. The device supports up to four cash drawers, making it suitable for shared POS stations and multi-lane retail environments.

To help improve reliability in high-volume settings, the controller monitors drive voltage and executes open commands only when sufficient power is available, helping reduce failed drawer opens. Commands can also be held and executed once the device is ready.

The mC-Connect Drawer integrates with Star Quick Setup Utility, Star Windows Software and the StarXpand SDK to support configuration and POS integration. It is compatible with Android, iOS, Windows and web-based systems. Star Micronics, a provider of POS hardware, cloud printing and labeling technologies, said the product is available through its authorized distribution partners.
