Letter from the editor

As children return to school, retailers mark down sand toys and jet skis, and restaurateurs create recipes for a change of season, we continue to follow all things payments with an eye for providing essential information and resources to empower payments professionals working in our dynamic industry. We've been at it for a long time—40 years in October. And, as mentioned in this letter previously, we've begun including retrospective articles in each issue to celebrate our upcoming anniversary.

This issue's lead article gives the life of a transaction a retrospective frame, providing insights and information on what has occurred historically and what a transaction's life may look like in the future. There is quite a bit to explore when it comes to a transaction's lifecycle, so we'll continue to delve into this fascinating topic going forward.

Another article in our retrospective series—penned by Adam Atlas, author of the Legal ease column—provides pithy stories and lessons learned during his 20 years (!) of writing for us. A special thanks to Adam for his reliably spot-on words. We also want to appreciate the other contributors to this issue who have shared knowledge on such topics as how to make a great first impression, ways in which AI may influence open banking, three of five things every professional payments agent should have, and what were considered in 2015 to be new payment rails, extended transaction lifecycles and advanced transaction routing.

We've covered a range of current developments in News Briefs, which highlight a selection of recent stories published on www.greensheet.com. These include the Accredited Standards Committee X9 Inc.'s release of the revised X9.69 key management framework; Illinois Senator Richard Durbin's push, with bipartisan support, of the Credit Card Competition Act, demanding merchants have a choice of credit card processing networks; the Financial Stability Board's proposal for a global regulatory framework for crypto-asset management; a recent U.S. Court of Appeals ruling that a lawsuit brought in 2011 by the National ATM Council Inc. against Visa and Mastercard can go forward; and the release of the 2023 Inc. 5000 list, which features multiple payments industry companies.

Also for you are new product and company profiles and updates of interest on milestones achieved within our sphere. To showcase your latest company news, please send a press release to press@greensheet.com, and for comments and questions, please email greensheet@greensheet.com. end of article
