If you read the May GSQ you know that brochure Web sites look nice, but to generate income, Web sites must be commerce-enabled. And now that software manufacturers are catching on, there are as many options for payment processing as there are merchants. Two such options are from ICVERIFY and GO Software.

ICVERIFY (a CyberCash company, see issue 98:05:01) and TABNet (the world's largest domain registration agent and Web hoster) have formed an agreement to use ICVERIFY's NetVERIFY to commerce enable the TABNet Web sites of small and medium-sized businesses.

TABNet provides turnkey commerce hosting and services, including NetVERIFY, to 1,000 Web merchants. "With NetVERIFY, we now have an industrial-strength payment engine that will allow our customers to control transactions over a secure Internet connection," said Ken Leonard, co-founder and CEO of TABNet.

NetVERIFY enables commercial Internet sites to accept credit cards in real-time, and allows merchants to initiate or edit transactions, invoke settlement, search records, and generate payment reports at any time over the Internet. The system also has direct connections to the processing networks of more than 99% of U.S. banks and most major financial networks in Canada. TABNet also uses a proprietary fraud reduction system.

"Through our partnership with TABNet, on-line businesses will reach their full marketing potential with the most cost-effective and functional transaction processing solution available for electronic commerce today." But, if your merchants don't need real-time processing, there's another way for them to get their feet wet and it's from a familiar name, GO Software.

GO Software, Inc., the makers of PC-Charge, have just released a new product for businesses to build electronic storefronts that send secure e-mail orders for payment processing and order fulfillment.

e-Charge was designed for the businesses that don't require real-time payment processing on their Web sites. These sites benefit from the lower cost associated with processing payments and orders themselves but still offer businesses a way to tap into the fastest growing economic sector, "E-commerce", without changing the way they do business.

"Internet merchants that process less than the robust few, now doing huge volumes, now have full access to the credit card processing world that they otherwise would only have access to with a larger cash outlayóthis solution makes sense and now offers an alternative," said Steve Eazell, Director of ISO Sales for GO.

e-Charge includes security management capabilities, automatic payment processing, and strong encryption tools, all of which are necessary to build shopping cardsystems and send secure e-mail. PC-Charge is used for payment processing, it is widely certified and will accept all card types. It also allows businesses to use their existing bank relationships, assuming that you have a relationship that will accept Internet business.

The software is comprised of two main components: an e-Charge Server and an e-Charge Merchant. e-Charge Server is used to create the secure electronic storefront and includes wizards and private key cryptography as well as a security administrator. e-Charge Merchant works with third party e-mail products (Eudora, Netscape, etc.) and allows the merchant to receive their orders as attachments just like other e-mails. e-Charge Merchant then decrypts the orders and lets the merchant process the credit card payments with a click of the mouse. Customized, detailed order information is also included for importation into accounting packages and order fulfillment.

"Already, we've seen e-commerce become an important source of revenue for many leading-edge businesses. This portion of the market is growing and is going to continue to grow as more and more businesses seize the opportunities the Internet provides. We've provided a simple, cost-effective way for customers to tap into this market leveraging their existing technology and way of doing business," said William Pittman, Chief Technical Officer of GO Software.
