Intellect
Electronics, Inc., has introduced a wireless terminal that accepts
credit, debit, and stored-value cards while supporting a wide range
of payment applications and any smart card program.
If you're unfamiliar
with Intellect, they are a subsidiary of Intellect Holdings, Ltd., an
Australian company which produces smart card readers, electronic
wallets, and mobile terminals which are available in 25 countries,
including the U.S.
The new product is
the Intellect 9770 terminal, which is inter-operable with existing
store systems. The portable unit uses radio frequencies for
transmission and is rechargeable. There is an integrated thermal
printer, a magnetic card reader, and five chip card reader/writers in
each terminal. Additionally, the terminal has expandable memory of up
to 1MB.
"Intellect's
universal payment terminal brings to the mobile retail market the
ability to accept any type of electronic payment card and provide
on-line and off-line transaction processing in a portable fashion,"
said Thomas G. Ream, president of Intellect Electronics, Inc.
"Retailers such as street vendors, pizza deliverers, and home service
providers can now go anywhere and do anything with the ability to
accept all forms of electronic payments from a single
terminal."
The 9770 is also
available as a desktop unit that allows for connectivity to current
store systems, with configurable modem or LAN modules and separate
communications interfaces for bar code readers and scanners. For
