Data Merchant Services Corp., recently debuted their latest addition to
their wireless terminal product line. It’s the hand held Cell Trek
Explorer, produced by Lipman USA.
The
terminal is enabled for use on the nationwide BellSouth Intelligent
Wireless Network and is significant because it marks FDMS’ first
large-scale effort to penetrate the expanding wireless payments market.
The
product offering includes the Cell Trek Explorer, as well as the Nurit
2090 Wireless POS/EDC terminal. Both allow merchants to accept credit and
debit cards virtually anywhere that BellSouth Wireless Data offers
coverage—currently 93% of the U.S. urban business population. This means
that credit and debit card acceptance can be offered in areas that were
previously cash only or high-risk off-line processing, such as cabs, pizza
delivery, home improvement, stadiums, trade show vendors, and parking
facilities.
First
Data will also be supporting MasterCard and Visa commercial cards, opening
the wireless market to the business-to-business segment. When a commercial
card is presented to a merchant, the terminal will prompt for the sales
tax amount and a purchase order number. This data is passed back to the
cardholder’s bank electronically, automating their accounts payable
function.
BellSouth
Corporation provides communications, cable and digital TV, and Internet
