Letter from the editor

The cryptocurrency realm has been roiled by corporate and bank failures, threats of legislative and regulatory actions, and plummeting values. Yet two recent reports reached differing conclusions on whether the "crypto winter" is thawing or whether the deep chill will remain. According to a survey by financial technology firm Paxos, 75 percent of consumers interviewed remain confident about the future of crypto. Pew Research Center, on the other hand, found that among adult Americans who have heard of cryptocurrency, 75 percent are not confident in its safety and reliability.

It seemed that digging deeper in the crypto and digital assets ecosystem to ascertain whether recent failures have been a wake-up call, identify the root causes of recent failures, explore how regulation might help and hinder future progress, and determine potential impacts if innovation moves offshore. Those issues and more are explored in this issue's lead article.

And explorations continue in our Education and Views sections, where contributors share insights on such topics as the need for payments companies to employ some of the same technology they sell so they can use the latest advancements to implement solutions faster than fraudsters can devise new attacks; glaring payfac deficits exposed when using them to accept payments; why keeping track of changing consumer shopping habits is imperative for all types of businesses; impacts of the CFPB's new proposed card fee cap and how card issuers, in particular, can pivot while taking good care of themselves and their customers; and nine trends in banking and payments to watch at a time of radical transformation.

In the news we've highlighted stories on new research from Adobe Analytics revealing that online purchases of groceries and home furnishings are growing at a rapid clip, and BNPL is a key driver of this trend; a March 23, 2023, report in which Hindenburg alleged Block plays fast and loose with anti-money laundering rules, resulting in rampant criminal activity on the network; agreement among experts that a passwordless future is now within reach; and recent reports suggesting that Web3 technology is placing humans at an inflection point in terms of environmental sustainability.

Not to be missed are new product and company profiles, a resource on preventing burnout and what to do in the aftermath of a failed project. If you have suggestions for us, please email greensheet@greensheet.com. And remember to send your latest news to press@greensheet.com. end of article
