Stay competitive with technology recycling

Product: Media Destruction Services
Company: South Seas Data LLC

South Seas Data LLC, a technology service provider, recently added media destruction to its suite of services, an option designed to help users and deployers manage the entire technology lifecycle. The service complements the company's existing solutions and reaffirms its commitment to provide a one-stop shop for all technology requirements, company representatives stated.

Pete Philomey, national sales manager at South Seas Data, has seen a growing need for secure and environmentally friendly disposal methods, especially among retailers, ISOs and agents. South Seas Data manages the physical destruction process on site using an industrial grade shredding device and approved methods for sanitizing electronic storage media.

"Our partners are assured that their data has been fully destroyed," Philomey said. "Hardware reformatting doesn't guarantee that the data is gone. We'll accept any media for destruction, as long as there is no battery in it; this includes hard drives, thumb drives and mobile phones."

Security, accuracy

Philomey further noted that media destruction services complement South Seas Data's suite of technology solutions, which includes managed IT and depot services and software solutions. The company's expertise in shipping, deploying and installing POS equipment helps partners keep technology up to date, freeing them to focus on core business priorities, he stated.

South Seas Data representatives said the company is currently accepting the following media:

  • Solid state drives
  • Hard drives – consumer and enterprise
  • Thumb drives, SD cards, external drives or products that contain memory and data
  • Portable electronic devices (cell phones, laptops)
  • Decommissioned laptops and computer systems

Upon arrival at South Seas Data, units are stored in security cages in a restricted facility; only authorized personnel have access to security cages. The actual destruction is conducted and a certificate of destruction is provided for verification. When the physical destruction cycle is complete, South Seas Data recycles leftover materials in an eco-friendly manner.

"Our trained staff keeps partners updated and informed throughout each project to make sure we meet requirements and specified time periods," Philomey said. "For additional accuracy and as an extra precaution, we confirm and verify device quantities against original orders before we shred and destroy devices."

Full chain of custody

South Seas Data takes a systematic approach to removing media, physically destroying equipment and working with advanced electronic recyclers to process the scraps, Philomey noted. Throughout the media destruction process, South Seas Data maintains a fully secure chain of custody for all devices to ensure that all resident data is destroyed.

The company's data destruction process meets Department of Defense standards as well as NIST 800-88 guidelines for media sanitization. These guidelines apply to mechanical and solid state drive hard drives, removable media and portable electronic devices, Philomey noted.

"We provide additional options for decommissioning full computer systems or devices," Philomey said. "We remove the media and conduct the physical destruction as well as process the rest of the device correctly with our partner in electronic recycling. We can provide this service as a one-time project or on a regularly scheduled basis." end of article
