When we embarked upon a lead feature on developments in the self-service sphere, we expected it to be a fruitful topic; we did not know, however, just how much momentum this segment already has and what tremendous transformative potential it holds for the payments and retail industries. Consumer expectations and digital technologies are bringing self-service into the center, not just for restaurants, but also for a host of other retail segments and even professional services.

We believe this issue's lead article, "Self-serve economy opens new sales channel," offers a glimpse of a new payments landscape that revolutionizes brick-and-mortar retail, along with many other arenas where individuals and businesses transact. We hope you'll come away with fresh ideas on where you can jump in and exploit the strength of self-service for the benefit of your merchant customers and your own bottom line.

We also hope you'll benefit from the articles so carefully crafted by our industry-expert contributing writers. In this issue you'll find an eye-opening discussion of counterfeiting in the wine industry and how that corresponds to what merchants are up against daily when it comes to counterfeiting, not just at the POS, but also in other areas of their businesses; analysis of the Fed's faster payments initiative and why it's very much still a work in progress; tips on how to identify and hire strong sales agents; and cost-effective steps you can suggest to help restaurateurs build business during the summer, a season when those who aren't in resort areas tend to experience downturns.

In addition to posting press releases under News From the Wire at throughout each business day, we also post news stories several times a week under Breaking Industry News. Our News Briefs section previews many of these stories, and there is always a cascade of new developments. This issue's news ranges from early detection of an attack on Avanti kiosks to Mastercard's planned purchase of AI enterprise Brighterion to PayPal's global advances; from a backlash to Visa's war on cash to Paysafe's planned acquisition of Delta Card Services Inc. to National ATM Council members' meetings with members of Congress; and much more.

You'll also find briefs on many of the latest milestones in payments, along with select company and product profiles. To include your news, please send a press release to, and please send us feedback at
