Artificial intelligence has moved from buzzword to business reality in payments. In the second, and final, installment of our latest Green Sheet Advisory Board Q&A, members share candid perspectives on what's working, where AI falls short and how its rapid evolution could upend long-standing ISO models.
Their insights reveal opportunities AI brings for smarter fraud prevention, underwriting and merchant support, as well as the risks it poses for those slow to adapt.
Contributors to this issue also weighed in on AI's uses in payments: one expert detailed how AI-powered product recommendations help independent retailers optimize inventory, boost sales and improve cash flow by turning POS data into actionable insights; another executive explained how AI is reshaping MCAs, transforming underwriting, pricing, forecasting and repayment into ongoing, data-driven partnerships that strengthen cash flow and transparency.
Other topics explored by our contributors include how Shopify, Stripe, Adyen and Checkout are reshaping payments and why ISOs and MLSs must adopt smart routing, single IDs and better risk management to stay competitive; merchants' expectations for seamless digital wallets and embedded finance, making smarter infrastructure imperative; why the UK's digital banking boom offers insights for U.S. banks, highlighting customer-centric design, fintech integration and modernization; why banks and payment providers, not investors, determine whether startups can operate; and how VARs are transforming acquiring by bundling payments with core platforms, creating multiple legal challenges for ISOs.
Our news briefs highlighted the debut of Toast's Go 3, a handheld POS with cellular connectivity and smart hospitality features, as competitors intensify their strategies; a lawsuit against Fiserv alleging the company inflated Clover POS growth by forcibly migrating Payeezy merchants and misleading investors about organic expansion; PayPal's launch of Pay with Crypto, enabling merchants to accept more than 100 cryptocurrencies with instant conversion, 0.99 percent fees and global wallet interoperability; the U.S. Payments Forum's release of resources on mobile and contactless payment security, offering best practices on tokenization, biometrics, fraud prevention and more; and a federal judge's ruling that the Fed misapplied the Durbin Amendment in setting debit card interchange caps, a decision that could reset Regulation II and faces likely appeal.
In addition, please enjoy the company and product profiles herein, as well as updates on recent appointments, partnerships, acquisitions and other industry milestones.
