Be 'as good as spring itself'

There's something about spring. Longer days, tender buds and sunshine warming fresh air tend to lift spirits in many locales. Even when days turn dark and unpredictable, raindrops beading on bright petals and creeks gushing along familiar trails can put a bounce in your step and a lilt in your voice.

As Ernest Hemingway wrote in A Moveable Feast, “When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest. The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.”

Thinking about that quote, it occurred to me that merchant services providers could benefit by endeavoring to be "as good as spring itself." I expect what that would mean when put into action would be different for each individual. But I think it essentially boils down to embodying qualities like renewal, growth, positivity and rejuvenation in our professional interactions.

Here are some ideas on how we can go about that.

  • Embrace change and innovation: Just as spring brings about new growth and changes in nature, payments professionals thrive and help merchants thrive by embracing technological advancements and innovation. Stay updated with the latest trends, payment solutions, and security measures to provide clients with the most efficient and secure services.
  • Foster relationships: Spring is a time of renewal and growth, and similarly, industry professionals can focus on growing strong relationships with clients and partners. Identify their needs and goals, and, with enthusiasm, offer personalized solutions that add value to their businesses.
  • Be transparent in communication: Like sunny spring days enable photosynthesis, transparency in communication is essential for building relationships in the payments industry. Be honest and upfront with clients about fees, terms and services to build trust and credibility.
  • Provide exceptional service: Just as spring brings a sense of freshness and vitality, aim to provide exceptional service that wows clients by exceeding their expectations. Be responsive to their needs, offer proactive support and continuously seek ways to improve their payment processing experience. And do it with a genuine smile.
  • Be adaptable: Spring weather can be unpredictable, requiring adaptability and resilience. Similarly, payments professionals need to adapt to changes in the market, regulations and client demands. Flexibility and agility are key to thriving.
  • Always be learning: Just as spring is a season of growth, you can expand your knowledge through continuous learning and development. Stay informed about industry best practices, attend training sessions and seminars, and seek opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Community engagement: Like a vibrant sense of community that blossoms in spring, engage with your local community and support small businesses. Participate in events, sponsorships and initiatives that demonstrate your commitment to the well-being of your community.

Speaking of well-being, underlying all of your efforts must be self-care. Eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and spend time with people you truly enjoy, doing things you also enjoy so you will be constantly renewed and most able to be "as good as spring itself." end of article
