Letter from the editor

With this issue of The Green Sheet about to go to press, a global cyber attack targeting multiple entities, including the U.S. Energy Department, has people across America on edge, wondering how we can adequately protect the infrastructures we all rely on, the sensitive data we transmit to accomplish everyday transactions, and our very identities at risk of being posted on the dark web. For many people, this is only a passing concern unless their own personal data is compromised. But for professionals in the expanding identity community, protecting our identities and the networks we use, and thus our way of life, is an ongoing challenge they have taken on.

This issue's lead article, the second in a series on digital identities, shares insights from several leaders in the identity community. And the innovations on passwordless sign-in and reusable identity brought about by their dedication are reassuring.

Also reassuring is the generosity of our expert contributors, who share wisdom and advice gleaned from their successful careers on such topics as the crypto community's beginning to figure out what ISOs have known for decades; popular marketing tactics and what they're designed for; the multiple advantages of cash discount programs; the wisdom of focusing on business fundamentals rather than on innovation during uncertain economic times; and how companies can protect themselves if banks turn against them when there are bank failures or other signs of unrest in the economy.

In news briefs, we've included highlights from stories on innovations, government actions, new guidelines and research, specifically: a new study suggesting AIs and digital assistants may soon make cold calling a thing of the past; The Federal Trade Commission's consent order, issued May 30, 2023, will provide more debit card routing options to merchants, even for Mastercard debit transactions; merchants drowning in so-called friendly fraud have been thrown a life raft by Visa in the form of an updated set of chargeback guidelines, which took effect April 15, 2023; and the four-day Identiverse event, which featured education, networking and keynote presentations on the advantages of reusable identity.

You'll also find company and product profiles, updates celebrating the latest industry milestones, our Resource Guide and messages from our supporting advertisers seeking mutually beneficial partnerships.
