Letter from the editor

We're rounding out 2021 with the second installment of our two-part series in which members of The Green Sheet Advisory Board discuss what they did in 2021 to attract and retain employees and independent contractors, their outreach plans for 2022, how they've helped their merchants with this year's main issues, and where they see opportunities opening up for new payments professionals. In both articles in this series, advisory board members have brought to these topics deep industry knowledge gained from heading a range of enterprises—from long-time industry-leading companies to scrappy startups. They all inspire us with their ability to bring their visions to life.

Our contributing writers offer further inspiration on such topics as what it means to be a disrupting influencer and why it makes sense to be one; how to pick an ISO partner who provides what you really need; a new breakdown of the payment processing cost drivers; multiple benefits of offering BNPL at the POS; why open banking is likely to grab headlines in the new year; and how, with a bit of ingenuity, you can align your selling style and value proposition with our industry's expanding menu of services.

One terrific thing about being in the payments biz is that the ingenuity and verve of those working in payments means eye-popping new developments are always surfacing, and we, at The Green Sheet, always have relevant press releases to post under News From the Wire and plenty of developments to cover in Breaking News. Stories highlighted in this issue's News Briefs include promising early results from Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday; Mastercard's hardening of its SaaS billing rules; how digital options are stretching holiday shopping; Square's rebrand as Block; a class action lawsuit against Priority ISOs; and the debut of Visa's crypto advisory service.

This final issue of 2021 wouldn't be complete without our customary company and profile profiles, as well as updates on recent appointments, acquisitions, partnerships, research and other individual and company milestones in payments. Nor could this issue be complete without an appreciation just for you, our readers. Thank you for turning to us for information and inspiration this year, as well as for alerting us to issues of concern. We hope you prosper amid the challenges a new year will inevitably bring.
