CNP Expo spotlights fraud, big data, virtual reality
According to the CNP Expo website, the event brings together merchants, banks, processors, anti-fraud software providers, legal experts, alternative payment providers, card networks, and others to learn how to form partnerships to leverage card-not-present (CNP) payments in an increasingly multichannel retail sales environment.
In keeping with the promise, the annual CNP Expo, held in Orlando, Fla., from May 23 to 26, 2016, offered a power-packed line-up of panels and keynotes focused on enhancing and mastering the ever-growing world of CNP transactions. Along with the EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) implementation well underway in the United States, mobile payment growth and ongoing emergence of omnichannel solutions in the marketplace, there was also an undertone of "keeping one’s balance" in the rapidly changing CNP environment.
Attendees at the show were a moderate mix of midsize to enterprise level merchants, security and software representatives, and traditional payments industry professionals. This year marked the expo's fifth anniversary; a record number of card-not-present merchants were reported to be at the show.
The year of CNP security
Presentations covered a range of topics that included cross-border commerce, emerging payment methods and building a better online business. However, the overarching theme of this year's expo was CNP fraud and security.
The show docket included everything from establishing smarter authentication methods, to properly diagnosing behavioral analytics, and reducing account takeover and creation fraud. Indeed, entire tracks were dedicated to discussions of risk and security, along with a host of ancillary showroom demonstrations. Moreover, the showroom floor was dotted with fraud management, risk assessment and threat intelligence companies, all touting the latest security wares in the CNP market.
Several big-box and market-leading merchants, including Petco and Amazon.com Inc., sent top level security staff to the conference with the goal of learning more about recent CNP fraud predictions, as well as how to outsmart the fraud wave industry experts have predicted will wash over the CNP marketplace as the U.S. EMV implementation becomes more widespread.
"The EMV migration in the U.S. is the biggest single change in the payments world in decades and will have significant and lasting impact on card-not-present fraud, declines, subscription billing and more," said Steve Casco, founder of both CardNotPresent.com and the CNP Expo. "The concern CNP merchants have about these unsettled issues is reflected in this year's CNP Expo. They are here in force to learn the best ways of dealing with these problems from each other and to evaluate the best technology solutions from global providers."
In addition to drawing household brand names to the conference, CNP attracted several payments industry leaders. Professionals such as Jason Oxman, Chief Executive Officer of the Electronic Transactions Association, were present to network with industry peers and contribute insights to the show. The ETA represents 500 member companies worldwide that offer electronic transaction processing products and services.
"It was great to see so many ETA member companies at this year's CNP Expo," said Oxman. "I also want to congratulate Steve and team on the successful sale of the show he created to Reed Exhibitions. It's an exciting time of innovation and dynamic change in the payments industry."
Big horizons ahead
Big data also received its share of the CNP limelight at this year's expo, with panel discussions on such topics as how big brands are tackling big data challenges with machine learning. That particular topic sparked lively discussions about how to collect and leverage data and analytics to address new world challenges and redefine customer experience.
The concept of customer experience was also abuzz in the showroom as a steady stream of attendees took turns wearing state-of-the-art Oculus headsets provided by Payscout Inc. to view a simulated virtual reality shopping experience. Forte Payment Systems also unveiled a new recurring payment account updater at the event, demonstrating it on stage to the CNP merchant audience.
The CNP awards dinner recognized innovations and payments industry contributions in several categories. Honorees included Pay.On, BluePay Processing LLC, NuData Security, Kount Inc., Verifi Inc., Chargebacks911, MasterCard Worldwide, ItsPayd, Worldpay, BlueSnap Inc., Ingenico ePayments, Semafone, Recurly Inc., Trulioo, CardinalCommerce and Trustwave Holdings Inc.
