Readers Speak: Fintech experts offer 2023 predictions

The organizers of Money20/20 USA, coming up Oct. 23 to 26 in Las Vegas, sent in predictions offered by their own executives for 2023, as follows:

  • Tracey Davies, president: "2023 will see the % of women CEOS break 10% in the Fortune 500." The stats are improving across most indicators, she stated, but there are some glass ceilings still firmly stuck but the velocity of progress is accelerating except in the area of VC funding for minorities, but I think this is the next major shift we will see.
  • Gina Clarke, content director, Europe: "Consolidation in payments leads to a handful of top players." 2023 will see more acquisitions in the payments sector as bigger Fintechs look to consolidate in a market with less cash available than previous years, she said. Tipping point incoming …
  • Rachel Morrissey, head of content, USA and Executive Producer, MoneyPot: "Climate Fintech is going to get some real traction, as it has scored record funding of 2.2 billion in the last year." With fuel prices and profits being high, she noted, there will be great interest in green energy sources. With the war in Ukraine continuing, the danger to current nuclear plants, the extraordinary heat/fires and droughts of last summer, and the very hopeful breakthrough in fusion, climate change and energy will be at the forefront of problems to solve. And climate fintech will be central.
  • Scarlett Sieber, chief strategy & growth officer: "Embedded everything!" No really, she stated, embedded finance was one of the buzzwords of 2022, but in many cases (maybe outside of the U.S. given some of the new laws/regulation) this will be the year we will start seeing embedded finance being implemented across geographies in key ways with big payoffs.
