Letter from the editors

The education of the payments industry's hard-working feet on the street is central to The Green Sheet's mission. Since the publication's inception in 1983, it has been a reliable source of information and advice geared to help increase the knowledge and professionalism of ISOs and merchant level salespeople (MLSs) as they pursue their business goals. Each section of the magazine and website is devoted to a different aspect of this mission. And this issue's lead article is all about ways leading payment companies have adapted their training programs to accommodate today's dynamic, increasingly complex landscape.

MLSs who work with companies that offer ongoing training programs to help them flourish in the marketplace have an advantage over reps who are basically tossed into the water and told to swim. Today's in-house training programs are more comprehensive than ever, include a combination of on-site and online offerings, and accommodate a range of learning styles. Industry experts contributing to this issue offer tips on how to select the right sales model for your business, explore legal issues pertaining to virtual currency, offer an inside look at smart terminals, discuss the evolution of cash advance programs, and analyze the Fed's new regulatory amendments affecting e-checks and remote deposit capture.

Also included are news briefs on the acquisition of CardConnect by First Data Corp. and the acquisition of Total Merchant Services Inc. by North American Bancard Holdings LLC; Chipotle's discovery of malware during investigation of its recent breach; a Washington, D.C. court's decision to revisit a lawsuit against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in which it had previously ruled in favor of the plaintiffs; a lawsuit filed by Universal Secure Registry against Apple Inc. for patent infringement; warnings of a phishing scam involving DocuSign Inc.; Google Inc. teaming up with PayPal Inc. for mobile pay-by-fingerprint; and First Data's recognition as the top U.S. employer for veterans. And, of course, we've included company, product and industry leader profiles, along with the latest individual and industry milestones. These include new awards, litigation, expansions and relocations, research, partnerships, acquisitions, and executive appointments.

Our next lead article will continue the discussion of training in the industry, expanding beyond individual company programs to share educational resources that are open to payment professionals industry-wide.
