Eliminating pennies will produce merchant windfall

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is expected to stop producing pennies in July 2026, in accordance with an executive order issued by President Trump in March 2025. Now a new report out of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond suggests the move will result in a "rounding tax" costing U.S. consumers over $6 million a year. If the government decides to cease producing nickels as well, the cost to consumers would balloon to almost $56 million annually, the report revealed.

Same-day payments lead ACH growth

The ACH network continues to chart solid growth, driven in large part by same-day payments, Nacha reported. Overall, 8.7 billion payments valued at $23.3 trillion moved across the ACH network in the quarter ending on June 30, 2025. That's a 5 percent increase in transactions and a 7.9 percent increase in value over the same quarter last year.

The Reserve Bank of Australia released a consultation paper on July 15, 2025, proposing to put an end to merchants assessing surcharges on payments made using Mastercard or Visa debit cards. What’s more, it said the cap on credit card interchange fees paid by businesses need to be lowered, and the card brands and acquirers need to publish the fees they charge.
