A penny for your thoughts, err that POS device
It's not often you see a card brand involved with giving away hardware. But that's what's happening, through a collaboration between Mastercard and Fiserv. The two companies are running a sale, offering up to 1,000 qualifying small businesses Clover POS devices for just a penny a month in hardware rental fees.
The deal is being offered through Mastercard's small business navigator platform, which typically provides information and insights, trial-based tools, and product discounts. The platform is said to be open to all small businesses.
The penny sale price will be available through Dec. 31, 2025, or until 1,000 small businesses apply and qualify for Clover devices, whichever occurs first.
It will add to the 800,000 merchant devices Fiserv said it has deployed globally.
The sale is a bit ironic, in that President Trump directed the U.S. Department of the Treasury to stop minting pennies, because it costs more to mint than the coins are worth. Treasury placed its final order for blank pennies in May of this year, and production will cease once that supply is exhausted, Treasury said.
Beginning of a long-term partnership
Mastercard said in a press release the deal marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between the two companies, a partnership focused on delivering "impactful, scalable solutions" to small businesses throughout the United States.
"As small businesses continue to digitize and modernize, access to trusted, flexible solutions matters more than ever," said Chiro Aikat, U.S. co-president at Mastercard. "By collaborating with partners like Fiserv, we're helping entrepreneurs navigate their next chapter with tools that meet them where they are – and where they want to go."
"At Fiserv, we're committed to helping small businesses succeed by providing them with best-in-class tools via trusted partners," added Jennifer LaClair, head of merchant solutions at Fiserv.
