TMG CEO named one of most influential women in payments

Tuesday, February 09, 2016 — 12:43:38 (EST)

Des Moines, Iowa, Feb. 9, 2016 – Eight thousand miles removed from her South Asian youth, Shazia Manus has found a home in Silicon Prairie, a section of the upper Midwest where technology disruption happens quickly…

That is how PaymentsSource magazine opened its profile of Des Moines businesswoman Shazia Manus, published this week as the lead article in its 2016 Most Influential Women in Payments issue. Manus, CEO of payments processor TMG (The Members Group), was selected by the editors of PaymentsSource as one of 25 female leaders driving change in one of the most dynamic areas of financial services. PaymentsSource is an independent information resource covering the global payments ecosystem.

Among the accomplishments the editors cited in their selection of Manus was her tenacity to achieve even in the face of incredible obstacles:

Manus has been finding a new way since her childhood in Bangladesh to her current home in Des Moines, where she's led TMG for the past four years, addressing the challenges and opportunities of the digital age of payments.

PaymentsSource editors noted how Manus’ leadership has translated into record growth for TMG, which helps credit unions and community banks provide innovative payments products to millions of U.S. and Canadian consumers. Named a Woman to Watch by the Credit Union Times in 2012, Manus has since led TMG’s growth to the point it now serves seven of the 13 largest U.S. credit unions. The company also recently launched a Canadian line of business called Collabria.

Prior to joining TMG, Manus served as the CEO of Greater Iowa Credit Union, where she engineered a significant turn-around of the institution, achieving substantial profitability and membership growth. She also led a multi-million dollar business acquisition, adding to the credit union’s overall value for members.

Manus advocates for the success of all women – both in the financial services field and beyond. Her personal story, financial expertise and passion for the advancement of more women in business were the basis of her recent white paper, “Financial Support Critical to Greater Female Leadership.”

During the nomination process, Manus told PaymentsSource editors: “There are opportunities for women to advance their careers in payments. Perhaps what we need, however, is to focus just as strongly on girls. One recent study found even though the same percentage of 4th-grade girls and boys said they liked science, more girls eventually turn away from science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Mentorship is critical. I know this from personal experience. My grandfather moved mountains to ensure I would have the same opportunities as his grandsons. Against immense pressures, he encouraged me to take challenging entrance exams, apply for highly competitive scholarships and even start a home-based business at the age of 17.”

Manus’ achievements in business, spirit of innovation and advocacy for more women in leadership have made her a popular speaker and news source in the financial industry. This month, she will present at the Global Women’s Leadership Network breakfast, a part of the Credit Union National Association’s Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.
