SIMalliance elects 2015-16 board

Tuesday, August 04, 2015 — 13:10:26 (EDT)

London, Aug. 4, 2015 – SIMalliance, the global, non-profit industry association which simplifies secure element (SE) implementation to drive secure mobile services, has confirmed its Board of Directors for 2015-16 following annual elections for two of its six Board seats.

The Board members appointed to the two rotating Board seats, which are open to all SIMalliance members and voted for by members present at the association’s Annual General Meeting, are:

  • Alencar Nunes da Silva Junior, Telecom New Business, Products and Solutions Superintendent at VALID, and;

  • Michele Scarlatella, Central Marketing Director, Incard Division, MMS Group at STMicroelectronics

Both Alencar and Michele have been re-elected to the SIMalliance Board, and will serve a one year term.

The four permanent SIMalliance Board seats, retained by the founding SIMalliance member organisations, will continue to be served by:

  • Hervé Pierre, Embedded Software & Products (E&P), Senior Director, Strategy, Gemalto

  • Christian Lefebvre, Telecom Product Line Director, Oberthur Technologies

  • Michael Meyer, Head of Innovation and Alliances, Giesecke & Devrient

  • Yves Portalier, VP & General Manager, Telecom - Morpho

Hervé Pierre, SIMalliance Chairman, comments: “The year ahead promises to be a very active one within the secure element (SE) industry. The architecture of smartphones will continue to evolve, largely driven by developments in the NFC landscape. Beyond the SIM, we will see additional SEs controlled by handset manufacturers being integrated into mobile handsets. Additionally, new models of subscription distribution and management will impact ecosystems and business models, while putting the SIM industry in a pivotal new role.

“With an experienced Board in place, the organisation is well positioned to respond to these emerging market requirements to ensure SE technologies remain relevant and continue to add value to the delivery of secure mobile applications and services across all connected devices. By identifying and addressing SE-related technical issues, and both clarifying and recommending existing technical standards relevant to SE implementation, the SIMalliance aims to promote an open SE ecosystem to facilitate and accelerate delivery of secure mobile applications globally.”

SIMalliance has continued its work to facilitate and accelerate delivery of secure mobile applications globally throughout 2014-15. Significant outputs from the past twelve months include:

  • eSIM - The eUICC Profile Package: Interoperable Format Technical Specification v1.0.1 was published, to allow mobile network operators (MNOs) to remotely load and manage subscriptions across deployed machine-to-machine (M2M) and consumer devices in a standardised way. The specification, referenced by the GSMA, describes a common coding process for subscription data to be built, remotely loaded and installed into any embedded UICC, by any SIM vendor on behalf of any MNO.

  • Open OS and multi SE - A new version of the OMAPI Specification was released – v3.0 – incorporating updates allowing it to be universally implemented on every type of smartphone OS globally, including Blackberry OS. The OMAPI Test Specification was also updated to align with the core specification.

  • Hybrid NFC - SIMalliance delivered a campaign to educate NFC stakeholders about the security considerations within the NFC ecosystem and the approaches offered by HCE and SE deployment models. The campaign highlighted the importance of determining the best NFC security strategy based on the unique security requirements of individual NFC service use cases. Outputs were:

    Two workshops, one in Europe and the other in the US. A webinar. Visual aids which act as guidance to service providers on choosing the right NFC technology. A video interview filmed and made available by The Banker.
