ON World predicts wireless sensor market to reach $185 billion by 2020

Wednesday, July 29, 2015 — 08:35:45 (EDT)

San Diego, Calif., July 29, 2015 -- Billions of wireless sensing and controlInternet of Things (IoT) devices will be at work in thousands of applications worldwide within the next few, according to global technology research firm ON World.

“With affordable components, advanced wireless product developer tools and open source software, creating wireless sensor network IoT products and services is now accessible by tens of thousands of developers,” said Mareca Hatler ON World’s research director.

Billions of cloud-connected wireless smart objects (sensors and actuators) will create a more sentient, safer and smarter world. With nearly half a billion WSN chipsets shipped this year alone, IoT applications for the smart home have become the focal point where mobile sensing devices, wearables, smart lighting and other smart home solutions increasingly intersect.

The smart home market increased 90% last year with expanding IP security offerings and growing smart lighting solutions. Growing by 30X over the past two years, smart lighting has become a catalyst for the smart home as well as an entry-point for a growing number of commercial building, industrial and smart city IoT applications. IEEE 802.15.4 continues to have the largest market share across all WSN technologies and will be used in 60% of the smart lighting unit shipments in 2020.

The two WSN landscapes-- fixed and mobile-- continue to overlap, converge and compete. Examples include the Apple Watch and Mercedes-Benz cars that can be connected with Nest’s smart home products. With a total potential market size of 17 billion WSN devices, the largest WSN markets are fixed WSNs with smart sensing devices. The majority of fixed WSN applications will require mesh networking to support reliable, large-scale, cloud-connected sensing applications. Targeting a broad range of WSN applications, the next Bluetooth Smart specification supports IPv6 and a Mesh protocol is slated for next year.

By 2020, 5 billion WSN devices will be at work in tens of thousands of industrial, commercial, residential and consumer applications worldwide. At this time, fixed WSNs will make up three-quarters of the unit shipments. However, mobile WSN systems will make up 45% of the revenues due to higher device average sale prices and relatively high services revenues per device shipped.

Revenues for WSN products and associated services across dozens of industries will reach $185 billion by 2020 up from $29.7 billion in 2014.

Based on input from 2,500 individuals, ON World’s report, “Wireless Sensor Network Markets,” analyzes the market forces and competitive landscape for 50 unique markets and provides extensive 5-year forecasts (devices, services and chipsets) for each market segment by application, geographical region and technology. A few of the WSN technologies covered in the report include 802.15.4, ZigBee, 6LoWPAN/Thread, WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, EnOcean, ANT, LoRaWAN and others.
