StubHub issues statement on data security arrests

Thursday, July 24, 2014 — 09:43:21 (EDT)

San Francisco, July 23, 2014 -- We applaud the efforts of New York City law enforcement that have resulted in the arrests today of several individuals accused of illegally accessing and misusing valid StubHub accounts. StubHub Logo

In 2013, StubHub was alerted to a small number of accounts that had been illegally taken over by fraudsters. Since then, StubHub has been working in close collaboration with law enforcement agencies around the world to find those responsible and bring them to justice. Our investigation of these unauthorized transactions led to the case being opened by the New York City District Attorney's Office. This combined effort culminated with the arrests announced today.

It is important to note, there have been no intrusions into StubHub technical or financial systems. Legitimate customer accounts were accessed by cyber criminals who had obtained the customers' valid login and password either through data breaches of other businesses, or through the use of key-loggers and/or other malware on the customers' PC.

Our customers are our number one priority. Once fraudulent transactions were detected on a given account, affected customers were immediately contacted by StubHub's Trust and Safety team and refunded any unauthorized transactions. We also assisted customers with changing their password to secure their account from further activity.

StubHub would like to thank the New York District Attorney's Office, the New York Police Department as well as the many participating law enforcement agencies around the world for their efforts in investigating organized criminal activity targeting the event ticketing industry and consumers at large. We are pleased to be able to play a role in this effort as part of StubHub's continuing commitment to maintaining safe and open markets for fans to buy and sell tickets.
