Letter from the editor

A sense of power accrues when folks from all walks of life focus on the same thing. One such time is the transition from one year to the next. When January rolls around, millions of people see it as a chance for a fresh start. Some write resolutions on New Year's Day, only to forget them weeks later. Others, however, reflect on the old year coming to a close, set their course for the coming year and map out steps to take them exactly where they want to go.

Leaders in the payments community are in the latter group. Their success is due in part to their ability to plan strategically and follow through expertly, adjusting quickly as conditions change. No year has required more pivoting than 2020. This issue's lead article shares the first portion of insights members of The Green Sheet Advisory Board provided when we asked them how they've fared in 2020, what they've learned and what they have in mind for 2021.

Industry experts contributing to this magazine have also assessed the challenges of 2020. They have emphasized the importance of setting aside a few hours for strategic thinking now in order to reap considerable return on investment going forward; they've also noted the opportunity this year's rise in ecommerce presents to ISOs and MLSs seeking to help brick-and-mortar merchants set up online sales. Other topics explored include the looming importance of state, federal and international laws devised to protect person information (PI); the changing B2C landscape, which is spurring payments professionals to look anew at the B2B sphere; and how to design a great customer experience by putting yourself in your customers' shoes.

In the news we've included briefs on how Wnet and Mastercard are inspiring gender equality; the National ATM Council's eighth annual convention, which went online and expanded the council's reach; the rapid global expansion of the payment processing market; new research suggesting online buying isn't just a short-term fix for a temporary situation; and indicators pointing to a healthy 2020 holiday shopping season.

Inside you'll also find our latest new product and company profiles, along with as many updates as we could fit in about professional and company milestones such as executive appointments, recent research, acquisitions, partnerships and more.
