The escalating coronavirus pandemic is empowering cybercriminals everywhere, according to new studies by ACI Worldwide and OneSpan. Payments analysts noted that ecommerce has grown exponentially as physical businesses around the world remain shuttered; they also acknowledged current conditions have been a breeding ground for criminal activity. Debbie Guerra, executive vice president at ACI Worldwide, observed that criminals are exploiting the card-not-present space, especially buy online/pick up in store and click-and-collect payment methods.

"Fraudsters are targeting higher value items like electronics and luxury brand names, especially within newer channels such as curbside pick-up and in-parking lot pickup," she said. "We continue to see a huge increase above industry averages in eCommerce sales year over year."
