Letter from the editors

As we prepare this issue for publication, Green Sheet employees living in Sonoma County, California, are seeing their region breathe a sigh of relief after firefighters, in conjunction with local law enforcement and governments, valiantly prevented the Kincaid wildfire from bringing the same kind of devastation that the infamous Tubbs firestorm caused in 2017. Meanwhile, thousands of homes and businesses in Southern California remain threatened by multiple fires that sparked due to high winds and dry conditions.

These events coincidentally dovetail with our lead article on the impact of disasters, such as hurricanes, wildfires and floods, and the role payment enterprises can play in helping to prepare for and recover from them. A recent Federal Reserve report paints a stark picture of the ability of small businesses to rebound following disasters. Given that SMBs are the lifeblood of so many ISOs and MLSs, it makes not only humanitarian sense but also business sense to help. Fortunately, as you'll find in the article, there is much our industry can do to shore up merchants' preventive measures and help speed recovery in the aftermath.

Of course, helping merchants run thriving businesses is what today's ISOs and MLSs are all about, and our contributing writers offer plenty of insight on how to do just that in this issue. They discuss herein how to help petroleum retailers prevent fraud at the gas pump; what legal strategies successful ISOs use and which ones they avoid; significant opportunities found in partnering with community banks; why it makes sense to focus on using technology to empower yourself instead of worrying about being replaced by it; and how your word usage can kill or save deals.

And something newsworthy is always happening in payments. Our recent stories have covered growing consumer affinity for prepaid products; Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, eBay and Stripe's withdrawal of support from Facebook's cryptocurrency, Libra; new IRS guidance on taxation of cryptocurrencies; a ransomware attack on Billtust; and more. To see all recent news, please visit our home page, www.greensheet.com. We've also included updates on individual appointments, the latest company milestones and industry research, and key partnerships and acquisitions. And no issue would be complete without new company and product profiles.

We hope you find much in this issue to inspire and empower you. As always, we'll welcome your feedback at greensheet@greensheet.com and your press releases at press@greensheet.com. end of article
