Cloud-based EMV solution improves transaction speed, security

Product: Cloud EMV
Company: Clearent LLC

Clearent LLC, a full-service payments solution provider, launched Cloud EMV, a cloud-based solution designed to improve the checkout experience by simplifying EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) transaction management. The solution encrypts payment card data and uses Quick Chip EMV technology to reduce transaction times, the company stated.

Dan Geraty, founder and CEO at Clearent, said the main objective in creating Cloud EMV was to provide a simple, future-proof payment integration. "By putting the payment solution into the cloud, we can effectively remove our partners from PCI PA DSS scope and eliminate their need for EMV certification," he stated. "This ensures the long-term viability of their payment integration and allows them to focus on their overall software solution rather than on payments." As a single point of integration for all transaction types, Cloud EMV streamlines payments integration, Geraty said. A dedicated team of implementation managers provides additional support to users. Early adopters have appreciated the support provided by Clearent's development, product management and marketing teams, he noted.

Validated P2PE

Clearent Cloud EMV's multilayered approach to security combines Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards compliance with pre-certified EMV solutions and PCI-validated point-to-point encryption (P2PE) and tokenization. Clearent representatives pointed out that Cloud EMV's PCI-validated P2PE protects sensitive card data in flight and keeps it encrypted as it moves through the payment system, which makes the data worthless in the event of a breach. Cloud EMV protects cardholder data throughout the transaction life cycle and provides other benefits to merchants. These include a short-form Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) P2PE for qualified merchants who use PCI-validated P2PE, with approximately 90 percent fewer questions than standard PCI SAQs. Qualified merchants are also not required to conduct vulnerability scans or penetration testing, the company noted.

Tokenization

Cloud EMV tokenization replaces sensitive card data with a token that can be used for future purchases across all devices. Data is stored in Clearent's secure card vault, removing sensitive card information from PCI scope. This enables merchants, acquirers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to manage recurring payments, automate repeat payments and run ad hoc transactions without having to re-enter cardholder information, the company said.

Quick Chip EMV technology

Clearent's Cloud EMV solution uses Quick Chip EMV technology, which has reduced chip card transaction time from an average of 15 seconds to two seconds at customer checkout, Clearent noted. The pre-certified and PCI-compliant EMV solution can help merchants simplify compliance and reduce PCI scope. And this reduction in customer wait times can improve the overall checkout experience for customers and merchants, the company stated.

Following are additional merchant benefits cited by Clearent. Merchants can:

  • Accept payments anywhere: EMV Quick Chip is compatible with multiple communications methods, including Wi-Fi and 3G.
  • Accept tips: Merchants can use built-in tip adjustment tools to add tips to transactions.
  • Accept chip cards: Merchants can protect themselves from costly chargebacks related to counterfeit fraud.
  • Protect shoppers: Merchants can earn consumers' trust by offering a secure checkout experience with P2PE and tokenization.
  • Accept multiple payment schemes: Merchants can accept their customers' preferred payment methods, including mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
  • Improve checkout experience: EMV Quick Chip stores chip card data in the terminal before a final amount is known. Accepting the payment card sooner in the process reduces the time needed to read the card. This accelerates the checkout process and improves the overall experience.

Multiple integration options

The flexible, scalable nature of Clearent's Cloud EMV solution enables acquirers, ISVs and merchants to manage evolving device populations as they grow and scale their businesses. Quick Chip-enabled card readers are certified on PAX and Dejavoo card readers and support multiple integration options.

"If you already have an EMV-ready terminal, the [Quick Chip] upgrade is as simple as downloading and installing the new software," Geraty said. end of article
