Readers Speak: Whatever happened to QR code payments?

I've heard nothing about QR code payments lately, and I don't know of anyone in the business offering QR payment acceptance to merchants? Is this once seemingly viable payment option one for the dustbin?

Terry Johansen, Merchant Level Salesperson

Terry,

It doesn't appear that the payments industry's processors and ISOs have been eager to embrace quick response (QR) code payments, but they have found a place with major brands ‒ Starbucks, Walmart and Kohl's, to name a few ‒ so it would be premature to rule out payments made via QR code.

Starbucks has made QR codes an essential part of its mobile payment and loyalty strategy and leveraged the two-dimensional barcodes for marketing promotions, as well. Kohl's Charge cardholders are able to make payments by scanning QR codes at checkout using the Kohl's Pay app on their mobile phones. Walmart customers can employ the Walmart Pay app on their phones at checkout to scan product QR codes.

Some observers have noted that it is cumbersome to open an app, enter a PIN or use another method of authentication, and then scan a QR code to pay. For many consumers, the value proposition of such payments has not been strong enough to spur them to let go of their plastic payment cards.

With new players bringing innovative solutions to market in unprecedented numbers, however, the POS payment choices merchants offer consumers in the future are hard to predict.
