Readers Speak

Bad apples — minority or majority?

Your cover story had me laughing out loud when, discussing CFPB and the Durbin Amendment, you quoted credibly two of the most lunatic members of Congress ‒ Maxine Waters and Elizabeth Warren. Then to further the comedic effect in the Readers Speak page, when speaking about bad ISOs, you say "illegal, deceptive practices used by a minority of bad actors."

As I'm sure you are aware the vast majority of our industry resembles used car sales. I do applaud your sincere efforts to improve our industry's image, but we have a ways to go yet. One step in the right direction might be to screen some of your article writers more carefully as I often see the "bad actors" writing articles for your publication.

Bill Hoidas, Matrix Payment Systems

Bill,

Thank you for applauding our efforts and for your thoughts on our May 22, 2017, issue's lead article, "CFPB, Durbin Amendment in the crosshairs," and Readers Speak page.

The article you mentioned quoted Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as you noted. However, it also quoted Rep. Jeb Hansarling, R-Texas; Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.; Sen Mike Crapo, R-Idaho; and President Donald Trump. We don't want to fan partisan flames and will continue to present a range of perspectives in articles created with the aim of helping our readers build solid careers in the dynamic payments sphere.

As for "bad actors" in our industry, the view that unscrupulous people are in the minority comes from our daily contacts with professionals working across the industry's spectrum ‒ from CEOs of leading players to sole-proprietor reps serving merchants daily. Since we have no hard data on the percentage of bad actors in the industry, our view is an opinion; yours is also an opinion.

Thanks for bringing this up, though. It's been some time since we've done an article on rooting out the industry's "bad apples"; addressing this routinely would help foster best practices, something we can all support.
