Industry Update

The Green Sheet, Inc.RETAIL BRIEFS

  • Unmanned convenience stores may not hit American shores anytime soon, but a Swedish IT entrepreneur recently opened a neighborhood c-store stocked with essentials for 24/7 shopping. Customers must first register to receive the store's mobile app, which allows them to unlock the front door with a finger swipe on a smartphone. Customers then scan items using their phones, and purchases are billed to customer accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Not long ago, local products were only available at local merchants. Big-box retailers with large distribution channels simply couldn't compete on this level, but that line is fading. Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s warehouse club unit Sam's Club is building a team of U.S. buyers to bring in local and organic grocery items, a strategy also employed by Costco Wholesale Corp., to drive customer loyalty in regional stores.
  • To the disgruntlement of passengers, Uber has perfected what Amazon and others have been doing in less dramatic fashion: surge pricing, the practice of adjusting prices based on demand and other variables. Now six theme parks operated by Walt Disney Co. plan to charge regular and peak pricing for admission. Does that mean movie theaters and quick service restaurants will follow?
