How important is PCI DSS 3.0?

I've heard that PCI DSS 3.0 needs to be implemented as of January 2015. Not many merchants seem to be aware of it. What advice do you have for merchant level salespeople?

Melanie Belken, Merchant Level Salesperson

Your question is timely. Other payment professionals are seeking guidance as well. It's important to recognize how Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS) compliance, or lack thereof, can impact businesses, including yours. As electronic systems and devices become more connected and we approach the October 2015 deadline for U.S. migration to the Europay/MasterCard/Visa technology standard, the need for strengthened data security has never been greater. Indeed, there has been an upsurge in U.S. data breach incidents reported.

An excellent place to start is the PCI Security Standards Council website at www.pcisecuritystandards.org, where you will find plenty of useful information and documentation on the latest PCI security requirements (see the Documents Library).

The current issue of The Green Sheet features an article in the news section titled New Year's Eve countdown to PCI DSS 3.0. Also see the sidebar, No mad rush by merchants to PCI 3.0, that accompanies the lead article, Coming to terms with escalating compliance requirements, in this issue.

Another article that sheds light on this subject, PCI DSS version 3.0 revealed, which was published in The Green Sheet, Nov. 25, 2013, issue 13:11:02, in advance of the PCI SSC's unveiling of version 3.0 in January 2014. As new data security standards become available, we hope you will turn to our publication for guidance in the future.
