Mapping mobile, PC and tablet frontiers

As mobile and electronic devices command greater presence in the global population, opportunities for retailers are virtually boundless. U.S. consumers, on average, spend nearly two hours each day on mobile phones and over a lifetime will rack up and estimated 57,293 hours each. Total mobile, PC and tablet device shipments are expected to grow globally 6.9 percent in 2014. Following are the projected outlook and current trends in device connectivity.

Sizing up U.S. mobile user trends:

  • Revenue generated by mobile marketing nationally in 2012 $139 billion
  • Projected revenue from mobile marketing in 2015 $400 billion
  • Percentage of users who prefer native apps to mobile websites 85 percent
  • Percentage of users who won't recommend unpolished mobile sites 57 percent
  • Current active monthly mobile app users in the United States 224 million
  • Short message service coupon redemption versus emailed offers 8 times as often
  • Percentage of quick response codes scanned that lead to purchase 40 percent
  • Number of online searches done through mobile devices 1 in 4

  • Mobile phones - 2013: 1.80 billion 2014: 1.89 billion 2015: 1.95 billion
  • Traditional PCs (desk-based and notebook) - 2013: 296 million 2014: 276 million 2015: 263 million
  • Tablets (ultramobile) - 2013: 195 million 2014: 270 million 2015: 349 million
  • Other ultramobiles (hybrid and clamshell) - 2013:21 million 2014:37 million 2015:62 million
  • Number of Android-based devices - 2013: 879 million 2014: 1.17 billion 2015: 1.35 billion
  • Number of Windows-based devices - 2013: 325 million 2014: 339 million 2015: 379 million
  • Number of iOS/Mac OS-based devices - 2013: 241 million 2014: 286 million 2015: 324 million
  • Number of devices based on other operating systems - 2013: 873 million 2014: 683 million 2015: 565 million
