Security firms double down on new threats

Emerging trends in identity theft, first-party fraud and other financial crimes have inspired technology leaders to partner to protect against known and unknown threats. On Jan. 11, 2024, the gaming platform Underdog Fantasy disclosed its partnership with Sift, a real-time fraud protection service. The same day, security specialists Darwinium and AtData formed an alliance to leverage adjacent capabilities, and Forter, a trust platform for digital commerce, launched a new abuse prevention solution.

Dustin Cooper, CFO and COO at Underdog Fantasy called the Sift partnership a logical step, stating that protecting players through innovation is part of the company's DNA.

"Sift's industry expertise and innovative use of machine learning allow us to instantly identify and block emerging fraud threats without creating hurdles for our players," he said in a statement. "This partnership will help us further ensure our players can trust that Underdog will give them a fun, fair, and secure environment to increase their enjoyment of sports."

Armen Najarian, chief marketing officer for Sift, agreed the partnership would benefit both parties, stating, "Underdog Fantasy abides by a player-first mentality, and we're confident our solution will help them do even more to protect their community without compromising a great user experience."

Fighting email threats

Darwinium, a digital security and fraud prevention provider, disclosed it will collaborate with AtData, an email address intelligence service, to augment Darwinium's customer journey orchestration with email address insight. Darwinium representatives positioned the partnership as part of the company's efforts to expand partnerships within its Evolution Ecosystem, using AtData's email-centric intelligence data to optimize its orchestration layer.

Jim Seymour, Darwinium's global head of strategic alliances, noted that email plays a pivotal role in establishing digital profiles and serves as a key data element in account creation, account management and payment transactions..

"With increasingly complex AI-powered attacks, having the very best combination of intelligence in real-time is essential," he said, adding that working with AtData will help the company enhance decisions and improve the customer experience.

Phil Davis, chief business officer at AtData, thanked Seymour for the opportunity, stating his company shares Darwinium's commitment to customer service and fraud prevention.

"Darwinium's forward-thinking strategy, and relocating threat detection processes to the network edge, boosts customer agility and broadens visibility in the ongoing battle against emerging fraud," he said. "By combining AtData's email-centric intelligence, we elevate the accuracy of frictionless risk assessment, benefiting our shared customer base."

Fighting policy abuse

In response to increasing policy abuse, Forter, a trust platform for digital commerce, launched Abuse Prevention, a next-generation solution designed to help merchants identify and block abuse through customized self-service policies and simulations.

Noting that policy abuse has been scaling, particularly during the holiday season, Forter commissioned a survey of American and British consumers, conducted by The Harris Poll. Results revealed that 56 percent of respondents admitted purchasing items they intended to return after using.

These findings suggest that merchants are unaware of the magnitude of this problem or how to effectively block serial abusers without negatively impacting good customers, according to Michael Reitblat, chief executive officer and co-founder at Forter.

"Policy abuse is a multi-billion-dollar problem, but the industry's legacy solutions stop abuse at the expense of customer experience and lifetime value," he said, adding that Forter's Abuse Prevention service provides merchants with more intelligence and controls to identify abusers, craft custom policies and assess their business impact.

Reitblat further noted that Abuse Prevention protects both checkout and post-purchase, and includes Policy Builder, a capability that gives merchants more visibility and control over policies. For example, a merchant can use Policy Builder to quantify losses related to returns, resellers, reshippers and promotions. They can use these insights to target those abuses and simulate business impacts, he added, using live or historical data.
