Hypercom and
NPC
In the May issue
of GSQ: The Payment Systems Quarterly, we told you about Hypercom's
ICE 5000 portable wireless terminal. National Processing (NPC) is now
conducting the first major pilot of the touch-screen card payment
system at 41 fast food restaurants in Phoenix, with plans to install
the system in 8000 restaurants nationwide.
What makes this
payment solution unique is that customers can operate the handheld
device from their cars at drive-through windows, or at the
restaurant's counter. to process a payment, merchants enter the
transaction into the ICE 5000. Customers then select debit or credit,
swipe the payment card, and enter a PIN or sign the touch screen. Two
receipts are printed, one for the customer and one for the
restaurant.
John Marshall,
senior vice president of sales for Hypercom said, "Customer activated
transactions at the take-out window are, for the first time, being
completed in the time it takes to assemble the order."
The wireless,
portable ICE 5000 is geared to the needs of businesses such as
fast-food restaurants, dry cleaners, and other quick service centers;
transactions are completed in six seconds or less.
