Some industry experts are predicting a slowdown in the U.S. economy, and more particularly in credit card use. A slower economy can, of course, have an impact on consumersí willingness to use card products. Thomas Layman, senior vice president and chief economist at Visa International in Foster City, CA, expects card purchases to decline somewhat from the 9 to 10 percent range in 1998 to the seven percent level in 1999.
