Getting
Legal
You probably offer
bankcard services, equipment leasing, and maybe even check guarantee
to your merchants. Have you ever considered legal
services?
Started in 1972,
Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., has been around for more than 26
years. The $100-million publicly held company has some 50,000
distributors and is looking for sales representatives.
You could look at them
as an HMO for legal advice. The consumer pays a premium of $16 to $25
per month and retains access to an attorney, who will handle their
problems at no additional cost.
Pre-Paid is a dominant
player in the full-service individual segment of the emerging
pre-paid legal services market. The company sells pre-paid legal
plans through a growing multi-level marketing distribution network.
The network provides sales reps the opportunity to earn more money
than any other associate in the company, no matter when or where they
start. Once an associate reaches a level, starting with level two, on
up to Director, he can never fall back a level. No monthly quotas are
required and commissions are paid twice weekly and are accompanied by
an updated readout of the organization's current activity and
personal production. PLS's projected three-year sales growth rate is
46% and is predicated on a 50% growth rate of the individual segment
of the pre-paid legal services market, combined with the company's
focus on increasing the productivity of its sales
force.
Pre-Paid Legal Services
operates much the same way as HMOs for health care. Employees pay a
flat fee in return for the right to use the services of a network of
lawyers to handle everything from house closings to the drafting of
wills. Even pre-existing problems, such as divorce proceedings are
covered fully or at a discounted rate. More unusual services, such as
defense against criminal charges, are available at a 25% discount
from the Provider Attorney's standard or corporate hourly
rate.
An American Bar
Association study showed that at any given time, 52% of the
population is dealing with a legal problem of some kind. Most of the
average American's legal problems can be resolved by reviewing
contracts and filling out simple documents which can be accomplished
simply by using the phone and fax. Therefore, Pre-Paid Legal is
taking its place alongside employee perks such as day care and
elderly care. Typically offered as part of "cafeteria plans," this
allows employees to choose from a variety of benefits including
traffic violations, estate and tax planning, consumer problems, and
contracts, as well as unlimited phone access to lawyers for inquiries
about any personal legal problems.
This type of plan is
extremely attractive because it gives personnel value without the
company having to pay any up-front fees. It is also attractive to
sales reps because they don't have to debate fees; they're already
arranged.
