Smart Cards-Smarter than Crooks
As you know, everyone has a different opinion about whether Smart
cards are better than this payment mechanism or worse than that one.
But, there may be one area in which "The Experts" can agree: Food
Stamps.
Unfortunately, food stamp fraud has been occurring since the
inception of the program. Most recently, 21 owners/operators of 10
convenience stores in New Jersey have been charged with illegally
cashing electronic food stamp cards and pocketing some of the cash.
Officials state that more than $6.3 million in benefits were
illegally converted to cash and that the smart cards provided records
which made tracing the fraud easier.
So, smart cards may be preferred to paper food stamps but that
doesn't further the smart card debate because food stamps aren't
currency. So, this proves only that smart cards are preferred to
non-currency.
