Bad Check Writing Most Common Crime
We all know that the "BAD CHECK" problems that the nations' retailers are experiencing, are primarily in the major cities and financial centers, right?
Wrong! The most people arrested over the last year in South Carolina, were not for Drugs, Assaults, Car Thefts or even simple larceny, but for Bad Checks.
The Beaufort County Sheriffs Department receives anywhere from 200-400 warrants a month for fraudulent check writing, in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Statewide, South Carolina bad check writing was the number one arrest category in 1994, with 27,079 arrests for Bad Checks, compared to 20,742 arrests for drug law violations and 20,694 for assault.
Merchants in rural communities, and smaller states, however, continue to say "we don't really have a check problem." The numbers, however, say otherwise.
