You think Cashiers Checks are safe, think again! The Horizon Group, Aurora Merchant Systems, Supply Express and National Bankcard Association, all equipment suppliers to ISO's, recently discovered Cashiers Checks can be altered. An ISO scam operation, doing business under several names, including, American Bankcard Systems and USB Montego Wholesale, purchased small Cashiers Checks from Great Western Savings, and chemically altered them for as much as $50,000.00.
These checks were given to both Airborne Express and UPS for terminals shipped by Aurora, and Horizon.
UPS was the first to note that the Cashiers Checks did not seem right, and through the efforts of Supply Express, who actually shipped bricks instead of terminals, helped set up a sting operation.
While the Los Angeles Police department Fraud Unit, did indeed apprehend the man who gave both Aurora, and Horizon counterfeit Cashiers Checks, and the man has already been sentenced to one year in prison, restitution is only theoretically.
