ExaDigm Inc., a POS terminal manufacturer, has developed a lower-cost countertop terminal, the XD1000, that pairs functionality that merchants need now with the ability to add what they'll need later.

The product incorporates standard dial up and Ethernet (Internet protocol) modems with an optional removable Wi Fi modem. It runs on a PC-based Linux operating system, which makes it fairly simple to add, remove, update or customize software applications.

And the terminal's USB and serial ports enable merchants to easily add or integrate hardware and peripherals.
