Paul:

I hope all is going well for you. I have a question regarding your book  Good Selling!SM  I am about 85% finished with a sales and marketing book I am writing and wanted to see how you went about getting your book published.

I am exploring the traditional agent/publisher method, as well as new electronic methods such as iUniverse.com, but I wanted to get your feedback on things to do and not do. Thank you in advance for any feedback that you can provide. Have a great day!

Tony:

You probably noticed that the book was published by The Green Sheet. It helps to be the publisher. Sorry I have no tips that would help.

Dear Green Sheet:

I was wondering if you could provide me information on the history of the bankcard industry. I am trying to put together a training manual for our sales reps and this data will be of so much help to them. Thanks in advance for any help you can extend to me.

Dores

Dear Dores:

We received your request for historical information on the bankcard industry.

We have not published a standalone history on the industry however, we have published  Good Selling!SM  This book, by our editor-in-chief Paul Green, is a terrific sales training tool for the financial services industry. The book is available to you with our "Sales Tool" discount of 90%, enabling you to purchase copies for your sales force at $1.25 per copy.

Additionally, our November 1998 and 1999 issues of  GSQ: The Payment Systems Quarterly  were our annual report on bankcard acquirers. These reports include historical information on this industry.

Dear Green Sheet:

I am a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst currently engaged in research about the future of transaction systems. This project started with a focus on the eCheck concept of the FSTC which was tried by the Treasury, but has evolved to encompass the transaction industry as a whole.

A link in an article I was reading led me to the Web site of The Green Sheet, which was really informative. I have also been able to read The United States Annual Check report for 1999 which was really informative and hope to have a copy of Bankcard report of the same year soon.

While reading the check report I was curious about what exactly "Bank on Us clearing" was. Besides this I was wondering if you could help me locate any source for information on the transaction industry - how the various operations work :credit cards, debit, checks, ACH, EDI, EFT, what systems are used to process transactions, who the major players/entities are in infrastructure and services, and their margins and revenues.

I realize these may be a lot of questions. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Gaurav

Dear Gaurav:

Thank you for your e-mail. On to your questions:

First, "Bank On Us Clearing" refers to checks that are handled by the banks on which they are drawn; that is the bank of first deposit is the same as the bank on which it  was drawn, or the two banks have a relationship.
