Mr.
Green: I
am a great admirer of your publication. Having worked for the New
York Times Women’s Magazine Division, I know a good publication when
I see it. Your stories about our bankcard industry are invaluable to so
many of us for obvious reasons. Thank
you, Bart Kohler, Merchant Service Center Dear
Bart: Thank
you for the kind words. Good Selling! Paul H. Green
Paul: As
a recent subscriber to The Green Sheet, I have learned quite a bit from your articles. In
reference to the EBT Update article in your February 7, 2000 issue (page
19), I have a quick trivia question for you. Who
processes EBT transactions (and credit and debit) for the largest
supermarket chain in the nation? Answer:
Fifth Third Bank/Midwest Payment Systems We
have direct links to Citibank, Deluxe, EDS, and Transactive for EBT
processing in every state that is live (last count was about 34 states)
and MPS is one of the top supermarket processors in the nation. We were
ranked the largest EFT processor in the nation last year (
American Banker, April 1999) and the sixth-largest credit card
acquirer (Nilson Ratings). We process for Kroger, Saks Fifth Avenue, Comp
USA, Macy’s, and many more. Also,
there are a few companies listed that may provide EBT services, but it is
because they subcontract it to another provider. They don’t have links.
They simply reroute their transactions to a processor that does have links
to the EBT gateways. Guess that shows that “Perception is Reality” in
this business. Keep
up the good work, and I would appreciate being mentioned in that list. For
more information, please go to http://www.53.com/mps/merchant/index.htm or
call me at (317) 383-2385. Sincerely,
Tom D. Behringer Fifth Third Bank/Midwest Payment Systems (MPS) Tom: The
names in the article in question were not intended to be exhaustive, and I
would not have answered the trivia question correctly. Thanks for the
information; I will drop your information in letters to the editor. Good Selling! Paul H. Green
Paul: We
received our copy of Checks at the End of the 20th Century... and Beyond! and found it to
contain very useful information. In your forward, specifically pages ix
and x, there is very useful information that we would like to share with
our reps. Would it be possible to reprint this material, giving proper
credit of course, and sending this information to our reps? Regards, Jim Mattox, The CFI Group Jim: Yes,
it would be just fine for you to share the data with your reps. Please
note the following on your quote, “Reprinted with permission of Paul H.
Green, The Green Sheet, Inc. Copyright 1999. All rights reserved.” Good Selling! Paul Green
To
The Green Sheet: I
am a MBA student at the University of Utah working on a field study
research project for American Express. I am researching data on the
merchant’s total costs for both (1) the traditional method of personal
check encashment and (2) the reduction in these costs when the merchant
participates in electronic check conversion (truncation) at the
point-of-sale. Several
companies I asked for information directed me to The Green Sheet Web site
in their replies. One gentleman suggested I e-mail Paul Green for this
information; another gentleman indicated that Paul Green’s book about
checks in the 20th century and beyond contained the information our group
was looking for. I
would like to buy the book if it contains the information our field study
group needs. Please let me know if the merchant’s costs structure is
discussed in this book. Also, if your company knows of any studies or
other information that would aid our group, this information would be most appreciated.
Thank you, Monica Brown Monica: Paul
Green has been writing on this issue for several years. All of the
articles published since September 1995 are available online at
www.greensheet.com and can be accessed through our keyword search by
typing “ECP”. Paul’s book, Checks
at the End of the 20th Century. . . and Beyond!
is available through Amazon.com, ISBN: 0-9670947-1-2 or you can call The

Greetings: How
do I locate a bank providing merchant banking services? Specifically, a
credit card acquiring bank and one that issues Independent Sales
Organization (ISO) agreements? Your
assistance and or direction is greatly appreciated. Regards, Rich Gurnett Rich: Please
visit The Green Sheet Online at http://www.greensheet.com and click on
“Resource Guide”. The
